Quotes by and about Luna Lovegood

From Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

“Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure,” said Luna in a sing-song voice. (OP10)

“She didn’t enjoy it very much,” Luna informed him. “She doesn’t think you treated her very well, because you wouldn’t dance with her. I don’t think I’d have minded,” she added thoughtfully. “I don’t like dancing very much.” She retreated behind The Quibbler again. (OP10)

“That was funny!”
Her prominent eyes swam with tears as she gasped for breath, staring at Ron. Utterly nonplussed, he looked around at the others, who were now laughing at the expression on Ron’s face and at the ludicrously prolonged laughter of Luna Lovegood, who was rocking backwards and forwards, clutching her sides.
“Are you taking the mickey?” said Ron, frowning at her.
“Baboon’s … backside!” she choked, holding her ribs. (OP10)

“Of course not,” said Hermione scathingly, before Harry could answer. “The Quibbler’s rubbish, everyone knows that.”
“Excuse me,” said Luna; her voice had suddenly lost its dreamy quality. “My father’s the editor.”
“I – oh,” said Hermione, looking embarrassed. “Well … it’s got some interesting … I mean, it’s quite …”
“I’ll have it back, thank you,” said Luna coldly, and leaning forwards she snatched it out of Harry’s hands. Riffling through it to page fifty-seven, she turned it resolutely upside-down again and disappeared behind it, just as the compartment door opened for the third time. (OP10)

“Oh, yes,” said Luna, “I’ve been able to see them ever since my first day here. They’ve always pulled the carriages. Don’t worry. You’re just as sane as I am.” (OP10)

Luna did not seem perturbed by Ron’s rudeness; on the contrary, she simply watched him for a while as though he were a mildly interesting television program. (OP11)

Luna took a treat breath and then said, without so much as a preliminary hello: “I believe He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is back, and I believe you fought him and escaped from him.”
“Er — right,” said Harry awkwardly. Luna was wearing what looked like a pair of orange radishes for earrings, a fact that Parvati and Lavender seemed to have noticed, as they were both giggling and pointing at her earlobes. (OP13)

“You can laugh!” Luna said, her voice rising, apparently under the impression that Parvati and Lavender were laughing at what she had said rather than what she was wearing.”But people used to believe there were no such things as the Blibbering Humdinger or the Crumple-Horned Snorkack!” (OP13)

“D’ you mind not offending the only people who believe me?” Harry asked Hermione as they made their way into class.
“Oh, for heaven’s sake, Harry, you can do better than her,” said Hermione. “Ginny’s told me all about her, apparently she’ll only believe in things as long as there’s no proof at all. Well, I wouldn’t respect anything else from someone whose father runs The Quibbler.”
Harry thought of the sinister winged horses he had seen on the night he had arrived and how Luna had said she could see them too. His spirits sank slightly. (OP13)

“It’s good, isn’t it?” said Luna happily. “I wanted to have it chewing up a serpent, to represent Slytherin, you know, but there wasn’t time. Anyway … good luck, Ronald!” (OP19)

“Mistletoe,” said Luna dreamily, pointing at a large clump of white berries placed almost over Harry’s head. He jumped out from under it. “Good thinking,” said Luna very seriously. “It’s often infested with nargles.” (OP21)

“Dad’s reprinting!” she told Harry, her eyes popping excitedly. “He can’t believe it, he says people seem even more interested in this than the Crumple-Horned Snorkacks!” (OP26)

“We were all in the D.A. together,” said Neville quietly. “It was all supposed to be about fighting You-Know-Who, wasn’t it? And this is the first chance we’ve had to do something real — or was that all just a game or something?”
“No — of course it wasn’t –” said Harry impatiently.
“Then we should come too,” said Neville simply. “We want to help.”
“That’s right,” said Luna, smiling happily. (OP33)

“The Crumple-Horned Snorkack can’t fly,” said Luna in a dignified voice, “but they [thestrals] can, and Hagrid says they’re very good at finding places their riders are looking for.” (OP33)

Luna and Neville were bewitching the doors along the opposite wall — then, as Harry reached the very top of the room, he heard Luna cry, “Collo — aaaaaaaaargh…”
He turned in time to see her flying through the air. Five Death Eaters were surging into the room through the door she had not reached in time; Luna hit a desk, slid over its surface and onto the floor on the other side where she lay sprawled, as still as Hermione. (OP35)

“Oh … well …” she shrugged. “I think they think I’m a bit odd, you know. Some people call me ‘Loony’ Lovegood, actually.” (OP38)

“Oh, no,” she said, smiling at him. “They’ll come back, they always do in the end. It was just that I wanted to pack tonight. Anyway … why aren’t you at the feast?” (OP38)

Harry: “Have you…” he began. “I mean, who … has anyone you known ever died?”
“Yes,” said Luna simply, “my mother. She was a quite extraordinary witch, you know, but she did like to experiment and one of her spells went rather badly wrong one day. I was nine.”
“I’m sorry,” Harry mumbled.
“Yes, it was rather horrible,” said Luna conversationally. “I still feel very sad about it sometimes. But I’ve still got Dad. And anyway, it’s not as though I’ll never see Mum again, is it?”
“Er – isn’t it?” said Harry uncertainly.
She shook her head in disbelief. “Oh, come on. You heard them, just behind the veil, didn’t you?”
” You mean…”
“In that room in the archway. They were just lurking out of sight, that’s all, you heard them.” (OP38)

“Oh no,” said Luna. “No, I think I’ll just go down and have some pudding and wait for it all to turn up…. It always does in the end.” (OP38)

Harry: She walked away from him and, as he watched her go, he found that the terrible weight in his stomach seemed to have lessened slightly. (OP38)

From Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

“I don’t think you should be an Auror, Harry,” said Luna unexpectedly. Everybody looked at her. “The Aurors are part of the Rotfang Conspiracy, I thought everyone knew that. They’re working to bring down the Ministry of Magic from within using a combination of Dark Magic and gum disease.” (HBP15)

Harry: Surely nobody in their right mind would have let Luna Lovegood commentate? (HBP19)

“I could hear the match commentary from here,” said Ron, his voice now shaking with laughter. “I hope Luna always commentates from now on… Loser’s Lurgy…” (HBP19)
