Wizarding Through the Ages.

Rubeus Hagrid

1928 6 December: Born to giant mother, Fridwulfa, and a human father.
Note: When it was revealed 6 Dec. 2004 on Jo's website that Hagrid's birthday was in December, this forced a revision of the year of his birth, as well as a recalculation of the year he entered Hogwarts.

Fridwulfa abandons her family when Hagrid was "abou' three."

September: First year at Hogwarts; he is sorted into Gryffindor. Albus Dumbledore is the Head of Gryffindor and the Transfiguration professor.

1940 or 1941

Hagrid acquires an Acromantula egg and hatches it in a cupboard in the castle.

"I was not born in the castle. I come from a distant land. A traveler gave me to Hagrid when I was an egg. Hagrid was only a boy, but he cared for me, hidden in a cupboard in the castle, feeding me on scraps from the table." (CS17)

1941 or 1942

Father dies during Hagrid's second year at Hogwarts.

Shortly after 13 June: Falsely accused of opening the Chamber of Secrets, expelled and given gamekeeper position. Aragog the Acromantula is released into the Forbidden Forest.

31 October - 1 November: Rescues baby Harry from ruins of his parents' house. Borrows Sirius' motorbike and delivers Harry to Privet Drive the night of Wednesday, Nov. 1st.

Missing 24 hours: Since it wouldn't have taken 24 hours to get to the London area, there is more to learn about the events of that night. [Essay]

c. 1955 Dumbledore becomes Headmaster of Hogwarts ten years after Tom Riddle left the school.

31 July: Barges into the Dursley's rented hut and tells Harry he's a wizard. He also brings him a birthday cake.

Hagrid takes Harry to the Leaky Cauldron and Diagon Alley. While there, Hagrid retrieves the Philosopher's Stone from the Gringotts' high security vaults and buys Hedwig as a birthday present for Harry.

late April : Hatches a baby Norwegian Ridgeback dragon and names him Norbert; the egg was obtained in a card game where Hagrid inadvertently tells the stranger how to make Fluffy go to sleep.

early May: Norbert is delivered to Charlie's friends when he gets to be too much to handle.

early June: Hagrid tells Harry the secret to pacifying Fluffy and Harry realizes that the stranger who gave Hagrid the egg knows it too. Harry, Hermione and Ron get to Fluffy's room and find the dog fast asleep. Together they overcome the Philosopher's Stone's various protections, and defeat Quirrell/Voldemort's attempt to steal it.

8 May: Sent to Azkaban for a few weeks, suspected of turning loose the monster that was petrifying students.

June: Name cleared after fifty years in the murder of Myrtle.

fall: Given the job of Care of Magical Creatures teacher.

2 September: Buckbeak the Hippogriff injures Draco Malfoy when Draco doesn't follow instructions on how to approach him.

"This is very easy," Malfoy drawled, loud enough for Harry to, hear him. "I knew it must have been, if Potter could do it.... I bet you're not dangerous at all, are you?" he said to the hippogriff. "Are you, you great ugly brute?"

It happened in a flash of steely talons; Malfoy let out a highpitched scream and next moment, Hagrid was wrestling Buckbeak back into his collar as he strained to get at Malfoy, who lay curled in the grass, blood blossoming over his robes.

"I'm dying!" Malfoy yelled as the class panicked. "I'm dying, look at me! It's killed me!"

Afterwards, Lucius Malfoy makes an official complaint about Buckbeak's ferociousness to the Ministry.

19 December: Hagrid receives a letter informing him about Buckbeak's hearing. Hermione promises to help research how Hagrid can defend the Hippogriff.
Note: the letter gives the hearing date as April 20th, but it acutally occurred on February 11th.

Dear Mr. Hagrid,

Further to our inquiry into the attack by a hippogriff on a student in your class, we have accepted the assurances of Professor Dumbledore that you bear no responsibility for the regrettable incident.

However, we must register our concern about the hippogriff in question. We have decided to uphold the official complaint of Mr. Lucius Malfoy, and this matter will therefore be taken to the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures. The hearing will take place on April 20th, and we ask you to present yourself and your hippogriff at the Committee's offices in London on that date. In the meantime, the hippogriff should be kept tethered and isolated. Yours in fellowship...

11 February: Buckbeak's hearing before the Committee for the Disposal of Dangerous Creatures. Lucius Malfoy argues persuasively that Buckbeak is too dangerous to be allowed to live.

"S'all my fault. Got all tongue-tied. They was all sittin' there in black robes an' I kep' droppin' me notes and forgettin' all them dates yeh looked up fer me, Hermione. An' then Lucius Malfoy stood up an' said his bit, and the Committee jus' did exac'ly what he told 'em...."

12 February: Hermione learns from Hagrid that Buckbeak is to be executed.

6 June: Buckbeak is scheduled to be executed but is rescued by Harry and Hermione. Buckbeak then in turn helps Harry and Hermione rescue Sirius from his tower cell before the dementors can deliver the "kiss."

30 October: Meets Mme. Olympe Maxime.

22 November: Hagrid shows Harry the dragons in advance of the first Triwizard task.

11 December: Rita Skeeter interviews Hagrid.

4 January: Rita Skeeter's poisonous article on Hagrid appears in the Daily Prophet. Prof. Grubbly-Plank takes over Care of Magical Creatures classes.

16 January: Dumbledore, Harry, Ron and Hermione convince Hagrid to return to work.

summer: Visits the giants of the north with Mme. Maxime. The trip is not successful; Death Eaters had already spread their influence to the giants.

2 November: Returns to Hogwarts with his half-brother, Grawp. One of his first lessons is on Thestrals.

14 January: Umbridge puts Hagrid on probation.

10 March: Firenze tells Harry to warn Hagrid about Grawp.

early April: Dumbledore is removed as Headmaster when he "admits" to forming "Dumbledore's Army."

30 May: Harry and Hermione are introduced to Grawp.

early June: Umbridge sacks Hagrid and tries to evict him. When McGonagall tries to intervene, she is hit with 4 Stunning spells and is taken to St. Mungo's.

1996-97 Y16-Y17

mid September: Harry, Ron and Hermione learn that Aragog is dying.
