Levine, Arthur
An Editorial Director of his own imprint (Arthur A. Levine Books) through Scholastic, Inc. and a Vice President of Scholastic, Arthur Levine led the negotiations on behalf of Scholastic to obtain the U.S. publishing rights to Rowling's novels in 1997. Janet Hogarth, originally part of Barry Cunningham's team in the Children's Book Division at Bloomsbury, had joined Scholastic and urged Levine to consider acquiring the U.S. publication rights. Levine read PS on a flight from New York to the Bologna Book Fair in Italy. He continued to bid higher and higher for the publication rights, eventually paying $100,000 (£66,666). It was possibly Scholastic's payment of this enormous figure which led to instant media attention, thereby putting Rowling's work in the spotlight more than the already-favorable reviews might have done (SS_JKRB).
